A classic Advent hymn about Christ’s return in glory, echoing the “Son of Man coming on the clouds” and final renewal; it holds both awe and joyful hope. Advent is that season where we look back to Bethlehem and forward to Christ’s return, and this hymn captures both. It’s full of awe at His majesty, but also deep hope: every eye will see Him, even those who rejected Him, and creation itself will be renewed. The words we sing today are mostly by Charles Wesley, the great 18th‑century hymn writer, first published in 1758. But he actually built on an earlier hymn by John Cennick, a fellow preacher and friend of the Wesleys, whose original began “Lo! He cometh, countless trumpets”. Even though it’s an old hymn, its message is so fresh: Jesus is coming again, not in weakness, but in glory, to reign and to restore. For GCI, that fits our hope in God’s grace for all — that Christ’s return is not just judgment, but the moment when every person will finally see Him as Lord and have the chance to turn to Him. As you listen to and watch this lyric video, let the words draw you into Advent wonder: the same Jesus who came once in humility will come again in power, and creation will finally be set right.
