On 21 Feb 2024, Dr Jonathan Reichental (Founder, Human Future; Former Chief Information Officer of Palo Alto, California) shared from his experience about how cities can use data to improve the lives of their citizens, their businesses and the way they govern. Data is a big topic today in every type of organization. It's the raw material and driving force behind digital transformations as well as the basis for artificial intelligence. In fact, 83 percent of CEOs want their businesses to be data-driven. That is, they want data to help and be a central input in, for example, decision-making, innovation, and risk management. But while there is a desire to become a high-performing data-driven organization, only about 32 percent are succeeding. City leaders also recognize the value of data and are increasingly demanding more value from it too. They also want to be data-driven in their strategic choices and operations. However, missing from so many organizations is a formal approach to data governance. Sure, data management, using tools and techniques to work with data is commonplace, but data governance, the policies and behaviours to increase the value of data and to manage its risk, are far less understood and implemented. The talk explored this topic and makes the case that data governance implemented well in an urban context can result in better results. In other words, if cities adopt some form of data governance, it will help them drive a wide-range of initiatives where data can be a source of success and it will assist with ensuring that poor data management doesn't create issues such as privacy challenges.
