After collecting my suitcase at Taipei Taoyuan Airport I went to nearby Chunghwa Telecom and bought a SIM Card with unlimited data for 15 days, which cost me 700NTD (=$35AU) Also with some helpful assistance at a machine, I also bought an MRT Ticket with enough credit for later return train back to the Airport. In Taiwan the ground floor is level 1 and due to superstition there is quite often no level 4 shown in a lift. (Like no deck 13 on many Cruise Ships). I felt safe in Taiwan and was very impressed with the regular MRT Train service. (But not the Hop On Hop Off Bus poor service.) Staying close to Taipei Main Station meant I walked to many attractions. For distant places I could have used trains and connecting buses, but I chose Uber for convenience and to save time. Most of the Taxi's are a Toyota, a car company with 27% market share in Taiwan. Unless you are short, I wouldn't recommend an Uber Green as you may end up with a Tesla Model 3, with very low headroom for getting in and out of the back seat. In Taipei many signs and menus were thankfully also in English. But on most days I also used Google Translate with any locals who didn't speak English and they were always happy to assist me.
