FX Matt Brewery receives carloads of covered hoppers containing malt from the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway via street trackage on Utica NY's Schuyler Street. The in-street switch for the Brewery's spur was based on a 1938 design for street railways. However, the switch dates to 1988 when it was specially made during the last big rail replacement project on Schuyler Street (continuously welded rail installed overseen by the New York State Department of Transportation--the project engineer is a friend of mine). This video, made on April 4, 2025, features the Susquehanna switching FX Matt, makers of Utica Club and Saranac Ale, and offers a close-up look at the switch as expertly thrown by Conductor Ethan. Also shown is a look at the Saint Marianne Cope memorial located across the street from the Brewery. Sister Marianne Cope was born in Germany in 1838 but her family moved to Utica a year later and lived along Utica's Schuyler Street. She likely would have witnessed some of early railroad activity as the tracks were laid down in 1867. More about her life here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariann... After spotting the hopper, the crew returned to the Utica Yard, located appox 1/2 mile from the Brewery, to pick up 4 cars to take to customers farther on down the line.
