Having painted for over 20 years, making my first series was a huge learning curve and a huge achievement. I had no idea that working in a series could teach me so much about myself and the work I want to create, simply by its qualities of immersion, challenge, and problem solving. In this video, I am hoping to give you some context into these paintings because I've always felt that understanding the process and the endeavor of creating opens a door to a painting in a way that allows you to understand the more subtle aspects of it's origin and it's meaning. Original art connects with something inside of us that is deeply unique to who we are, yet at the same time, entirely universal. By the time we see a painting and have it 'spark' something in us, it has already had an entire life in the mind and soul of the artist. I have always loved how artwork can move out from the artist and into the world as a free-standing entity, ready to connect with others in a ways the artist will never know about.
