Nov. 1921 S-70302-B “I Wonder Who (You’re Calling Sweetheart)” (Al Piantadosi, Joe Goodwin, Bud Green) OK 4487 Transferred with 3.0ML lateral stylus via 3.0ML VM95SP cartridge and an Audiotechnica AT-LP120 Turntable. Declicked and given light EQ by Colin Hancock with help from Andrew Oliver. Disc from Colin Hancock Collection. Discographical Information from Rust’s “American Dance Band Discography” and “Jazz Records,” The McPherson Museum, Mark Berresford, DAHR. Photo from Colin Hancock Collection. Here is a magnificent performance by the pioneering jazz alto saxophonist Loren “Mac” McMurray with Mike Markels’ society dance orchestra. The tune “I Wonder Who” was quite popular in late 1921, and the Markels record, backed with the winter hit “Snow Flakes” was a decent seller. Note Mac’s beautiful legato phrasing throughout the record (it’s almost operatic at times), as well as his excellent execution of slap tonguing. Also of note is Eddie Davis’ gorgeous sparkling violin playing.
