I Want To Hold Your Hand- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)

I couldn't do this cover without a little help from my friends- ‪@MichaelSokil‬ and ‪@JacobKMusics‬ who lent me their guitars! ‪@TheBeatles‬ recorded this groundbreaking hit single on October 17, 1963 at EMI Studios. It's the song that brought them to America and cemented their worldwide legacy The backing track consisted of John on his 1958 Rickenbacker 325 'Hamburg' electric guitar, George on his 1963 Rickenbacker 420 (most likely), Paul on his new 1963 Hofner 500/1 violin bass, and Ringo on drums. Overdubs included the chromatic guitar line in the verses, and handclaps It was the group's first song to utilize four-track recording, and the guitar tones were chosen deliberately. John's Rickenbacker tone is very muddy yet punchy, and George's lead guitar is bright and piercing. Each instrument has its place in the frequency spectrum. All guitars were plugged into Vox AC-30 amps John turned his tone knob almost all the way down on his Rickenbacker 325, and selected the bridge pickup on his toggle switch. This created a very warm lowpass roll-off, that did not get in the way of George's lead guitar It's not 100% clear if George used his Gretsch Country Gentleman, or his 1963 Rickenbacker 420 for the lead guitar. But the tone is bright and compressed like a Rickenbacker. His 420 model was actually a 425 model that Rickenbacker sent from the factory with 420 specs, by error. The 425 came with a vibrato, and the 420 did not. His guitar came in fireglo finish, but he refinished it in black There is also some controversy regarding the chromatic line that happens in the verses. This was an overdubbed part, and people have debated if this was a bass or an electric guitar. I used to be of the belief that it was Paul on his Hofner bass, until I listened closely to this isolated video-    • The Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand - I...   It became clear to me that this was a six string electric guitar, not a bass. Especially because of the times when it ends on an open low E-string note, instead of the higher E. My guess is that George played his Gibson J-160e plugged in, and rolled down the tone knob significantly. The warm tone can be easily mistaken for a bass guitar. George played this part live, which could imply he's the one who played it on the record For John's part, I'm playing Michael's 1982 Rickenbacker 320B electric guitar, which he modded to look closer to John's 1958. It has old flatwound strings on it, and I rolled down the tone knob on the bridge pickup. I'm plugged into my Vox AC-30C2X For George's lead guitar, I'm playing Jacob's Rickenbacker Rose Morris 1997 reissue into my AC-30. The 1997 differs a bit from George's 420 model- it's a larger body size (the 420 is 3/4 size), it's fully hollow, and has two pickups instead of one. However its fireglo finish matches what George's would've looked like when he first received it! '1997' does not refer to the year it was made, it's the name of the model itself. Funnily enough, this one was made in 1996 For the chromatic lead overdub, I plugged in my 1966 Gibson J-160e into my Vox AC-30. I rolled the tone knob down to 6 INTERESTING NOTES: John: 0:05 John slides too far from C to D barred, hitting the 13th fret of the A-string by accident 0:10 John plays the D5 shuffle in a strange way, as seen on the Ed Sullivan show. He stretches his middle finger two frets past his index 0:15 John often will hit an open string or two while transitioning to a different chord 0:22 John plays a swung rhythm here, leading into the C chord 0:54 John plays a normal open G chord, most people play a G6 XX5453 like he does in live performances 1:25 I have no evidence John actually did this tapping on the recording, but he often did this during live performances and I thought it was possible he kept time this way in the studio 2:07 John plays a single low B note here George: 0:01 George often hits a single open D string note during this riff 0:05 George lightly hits two A notes on the G string 0:09 In live performances, George always slides up to a high G chord on the 10th-12th frets. But in the studio recording, he switches it up and often plays a regular barred G chord 0:28 Here, George does slide up to the high G chord 0:52 George's D minor arpeggio reaches a high F note. In all other cases, he reaches a higher A note 1:02 George strums a light chord here instead of just single notes 1:04 George plays a higher C and E note for the intro riff 1:17 George plays an Eb note for the only time in the verses 1:33 George alternates between the D string and the chord 1:57 George plays a G chord by accident, instead of D Overdubbed Chromatic Riff 0:40 The guitar ends on a low E note instead of E on the 7th fret of the A string 1:57 The guitar again ends on a low E GEAR: 1982 Rickenbacker 320B (belongs to ‪@MichaelSokil‬) 1996 Rickenbacker RM 1997 (belongs to ‪@JacobKMusics‬) 1966 Gibson J-160e (belongs to me!)
