(28 Nov 1997) Natural Sound The British Prime Minister Tony Blair says troops will be committed to the peacekeeping force in Bosnia for as long as necessary - and warned that was a great deal of work still to be done. Blair arrived in Bosnia on Friday on his first visit to the country since being elected premier last May - a morale-booster for the British troops stationed there. After the United States, Britain is the biggest contributor to the force, with some 5-thousand soldiers on the ground. The British Prime Minister landed at Sarajevo airport after earlier meetings with Bosnian Serb president Biljana Plavsic. He was welcomed by the Bosnian foreign affairs minister Jadranko Prlic and Carlos Westendorp, the International High Representative to Bosnia. Blair toured the ravaged city, visiting the sites of some of the worst atrocities of Bosnia's 3-1/2-year war, including the Markale market - site of two wartime mortar attacks that killed scores of Sarajevans. Shown round by the Mayor of Sarajevo, he took time to chat with the locals and pay tribute to those killed during the Bosnian war. Later in the day Blair met members of Bosnia's joint Presidency and senior international officials to discuss progress in making the Dayton peace accord stick. He indicated that there was still much work to be done and that British troops would remain in Bosnia until their work was done. Blair's visit comes just one week before NATO defence ministers gather to discuss the future of the S-FOR peacekeeping mission in Bosnia.
