Children’s Publishing Roundtable: Nurturing New Readers Himanshu Giri, Neeraj Jain, Prajwal Parajuly, Richa Jha, Saanya Kanwar, Sohini Mitra, Tina Narang, and Ujan Datta in conversation with Smit Zaveri Presented by Amazon What are children reading, and how are they discovering books in India? What can publishers do to make reading an integral part of every child's formative years, through the school system, the family, and the cultural fabric of the society in which children grow up? Himanshu Giri serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Pratham Books, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting access to enjoyable reading experiences for every child. With more than twenty years of experience in the fields of publishing and social impact, he has guided the organization through its transformation from a traditional publisher to an enabler of a comprehensive reading ecosystem. This evolution encompasses the cultivation of partnerships, the establishment of libraries, and the development of digital platforms that have successfully engaged millions of young readers throughout India. Neeraj Jain's commitment to advancing Indian education and promoting reading, as the Managing Director for Scholastic India, has led to significant growth and expansion into ed-tech and education domains. In light of his contributions and calibre, he has been elevated to the role of President – Asia, overseeing the company’s publishing and distribution strategies across the continent. Outside of Scholastic, he has actively represented the publishing industry, serving as the Chair of the FICCI Publishing Committee and the immediate past president of the Association of Publishers in India. Prajwal Parajuly is the author of The Gurkha’s Daughter: Stories and the novel Land Where I Flee. His works have been recognized internationally, with nominations for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the Mogford Prize (UK), the Emile Guimet Prize and the First Novel Prize (France), and The Story Prize (US). Land Where I Flee won the Prix Littéraire Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie Franco-Indienne 2024. Prajwal teaches fiction at Krea University in South India and splits his time between New York and Sri City. His forthcoming children’s book, Karma and Lola, will be published by Tate Books in late 2026. Richa Jha is a children’s author and the founder of Pickle Yolk Books, an independent children's publishing house, shortlisted for the 2022 BOP at Bologna. Books written and published by her, all of which delve into the internal world of children and adults, have won both national and international recognition. She is a passionate advocate for picture books being a wholesome read for all ages.
