Contempt. It's one word—and, according to the Supreme Court, it lets a judge send you to jail without a trial and without a jury. In 1826, a lawyer named Luke Lawless wrote a letter to a newspaper criticizing a judge's ruling. He signed it "A Citizen." The judge jailed him for a day and banned him from practicing law for eighteen months. No jury. No trial. The same judge who felt insulted decided the punishment. Congress was outraged. They impeached the judge. When that failed by a single vote, they passed a law in thirty days to make sure it never happened again. But as others found out, the law Congress passed was viewed as something else by the Courts. The Constitution guarantees trial by jury three separate times. Contempt seems to override all of them. And is still being used in modern day America.
