His inspiration was passages drawn from Psalms 31, 32, and 36, which he turned into a simple prayer accompanied by chords on guitar. Recorded in 1981 by Maranatha!Music, it has since become a well-loved worship chorus arranged in a variety of ways. The vocal trio Selah recorded their version in 2004. Having grown up hearing this song as a child, I was drawn to how the melody so perfectly carried the emotion of the words. One day, after experimenting with different harmonies on the harp, I realized the potential for an instrumental arrangement that could fill a larger space around the melody. The timbre of the cello and oboe brought a certain warmth, complimented by the higher range of the violin, and I sought to work the parts of all three in harmony around the soloistic leadership of the harp. The resulting quartet arrangement includes embellishing material between two full statements of the song, drawing the listener deeper into the contrapuntal possibilities between four instruments.
