sqadia.com gives you this video lecture on endocrine physiology focusing on Endocrine Control. Endocrine control is mediated by hormones, which are chemical messengers secreted from endocrine gland cells into circulation and the blood, which carries them from their site of secretion to the target cells. Hormones can alter the rate of metabolism; spur growth and development; influence reproductive processes, and control the sleep-wake cycle. In short, Hormones impact almost every aspect of our daily lives, ensuring that our bodies maintain a delicate balance required for our health and survival. We will discuss every single step involved in the Endocrine Control of hormones starting from Classes of Hormones, Synthesis of Hormones, Hormone transport in blood, Hormone metabolism, and excretion in this video. ▬ 📌 Hormone Classes and Synthesis Let’s start with the major classes of Hormones 📍Peptides or Protein hormones 📍Steroid hormones 📍Derivatives of the amino acid Tyrosine, known as Amine Hormones We will see Hormone synthesis. 👉 Peptide and Protein hormone synthesis A gene for a hormone undergoes transcription into an mRNA. The entire peptide sequence forms a pre-prohormone. Then converts the preprohormone to a prohormone. It undergoes packing in secretory vesicles. Finally, Hormone secretion by exocytosis. Example: Insulin Hormone synthesis with C-peptide. 👉 Steroid hormones synthesis Steroid hormones are Derivatives of cholesterol. These are either taken up from the extracellular fluid by the cells or synthesized by intracellular enzymes. Once formed, the steroid hormones do not store in the cytosol in membrane-bound vesicles. Examples: Dehydroepiandrosterone, androstenedione, corticosterone, cortisol, and aldosterone. 👉 Amine hormones synthesis 🔹Synthesis of thyroid hormones: The steps involved in thyroid hormone synthesis are the trapping of iodine, formation of thyroglobulin, oxidation of iodide, iodination of tyrosine, coupling, Endocytosis, digestion of colloid, and lastly secretion of hormones into the blood. 🔹Synthesis of catecholamines: Uptake of tyrosine from the blood into the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla and Synthesis of Dopamine, Nor-epinephrine, and epinephrine, then stored in secretory granules, released by exocytosis. ▬ 📌 Hormone Transport and Clearance We will discuss the types of hormones based on solubility such as: 📍Hydrophilic hormones: These include Peptide or Protein hormones and catecholamines. Most water-soluble hormone molecules circulate in the watery blood plasma in a “free” form and do not attach to other molecules. 📍Lipophilic hormones: These include steroids and thyroid hormones. These hormones bind with transport or carrier protein. This plasma-binding protein hormone complex also allows lipophilic hormones to travel through the bloodstream. Hormone Metabolism and excretion We will see how hormones are “cleared” from the plasma in several ways, including 🔸Metabolic destruction by the tissues 🔸Degradation of Hormones 🔸Excretion by the liver into the bile 🔸Excretion by the kidneys into the urine So that was all!
