Quickstep Medley of Al Jolson Songs – Part 1 🎹 Reginald Dixon (organ) & The Tower Lounge Trio (accompaniment) at the Tower Ballroom Wurlitzer, Blackpool 📍 Organ & Venue Context • This recording features a unique collaboration at the legendary Tower Ballroom Wurlitzer in Blackpool. Reginald Dixon's organ is complemented by the Tower Lounge Trio, adding a rich, rhythmic layer to the sound. The instrument itself, a 3-manual, 13-rank Wurlitzer, was the centrepiece of the ballroom and the definitive voice of Dixon’s career, perfectly suited for the lively tempo of a quickstep. 🎼 Track Details A medley of popular songs famously performed by the legendary American entertainer Al Jolson (1886–1950), arranged for a lively Quickstep. The selections include: "I'm Just Wild About Harry" Historical Background: Composed by Eubie Blake with lyrics by Noble Sissle, this song was originally from the 1921 Broadway musical Shuffle Along. It became one of Al Jolson's signature tunes, known for its cheerful, upbeat melody and its deep roots in American vaudeville and musical theatre. "Rockabye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody" Historical Background: This classic was a major hit for Al Jolson in 1918. Written by Jean Schwartz, Sam M. Lewis, and Joe Young, it's a quintessential example of Jolson's energetic and sentimental style, blending a soothing lullaby with the driving beat of a dixieland tune. "Me and My Gal" Historical Background: This song was a popular duet number from the 1917 musical The Cohan Revue of 1917, composed by George M. Cohan. It became a vaudeville staple and a favourite of Al Jolson, known for its playful and cheerful melody celebrating friendship and simple fun. 📀 Recording Information • Label: Columbia. • Catalogue: FB3646. • Format: 10" shellac, 78 rpm, monophonic. • Issued: July 1952 🛠️ Audio Restoration Transferred from the original shellac at half speed for improved frequency capture.
