Description: In many educational institutions, observation of teaching and providing feedback are seen as required tools towards producing effective teachers. Teaching is an emotional act and use of ‘mechanical’ questions like ‘How do you think that went” fail to acknowledge this. Post-observation feedback has the potential to pave the way towards deeper and meaningful reflection about practice, thus enabling the affective domain. Identifying critical incidents is one suggested strategy in reconstructing post- observation feedback dialogue. This session will explore the concept of critical incidents, locate them in extracts from post-observation feedback dialogue and suggest alternative, meaningful discourse in reframing post-observation dialogue towards empowering teachers.
