Rodante Marcoleta on Monday said the Philippines could still become allies with China if both countries could set aside a brewing territorial row in the West Philippine Sea. “Napakalaki ng China, napakayaman ng ekonomiya ng bansa. Pwede po natin sigurong maging kakampi sa mga darating na panahon,” he said. This was opposed by Sen. Risa Hontiveros who said an alliance is only possible if Chinese forces stop harassing Philippine vessels and fishing boats in its territorial waters. Meanwhile, 15 senators from across the political spectrum have signed a resolution condemning recent public statements made by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China that criticized Philippine officials and institutions for positions taken in defense of national sovereignty and maritime rights.
