bittersweet. simply put, nier: automata is a beautiful melancholy. This game is a masterpiece. It is not played, it is experienced. I completely immersed myself into the plot of the game and after that, I cannot bring myself to play it again after completing all the endings. it is so, exquisitely gut-wrenching if you follow through with the storyline. It is one of those think pieces guised as an open-world game that invariably, with its clever little imagery, lead you into a deep mode of contemplation over morality and the consequences of your minute choices. The quote “memories of light.”, and the bridge scene where 9s lost it, really did it for me. The little visuals loaded with philosophical imagery stick with you whether you like it or not, and they make you wonder how on earth did a machine shooting confetti instead of bullets make you think about artificial sentience, emulating human social structures, self-determinism, and whether the fabric of what we call human society is even ours. How do we construct meaning? Thinking about 9S and 2B’s storyline, man. That is just pain. This is one of those games/stories that hit you after you complete it on a Sunday afternoon when eating your cereal and suddenly you remember 9S and 2B and then you realize you are Sad over all the Existential Angst This Game Managed To Invoke In You. It teaches you empathy and gives you the prerogative to really, really, wonder on constructing meaning in a world that is ultimately meaningless, in full nietzsche mode. The lyrics to the weight of the world have a very special place in my heart, it really stayed with me. This song is one of my ultimate comforts, right next to thanksat. The lyrics are so simple but convey such a feverish prayer of want. The chaos version is beautiful as well. to sacrifice your game data to hear this song, was worth it.
