Highland Dress is perhaps the most elegant and manly of fashions on the planet (yeah we're biased). But can you....should you...mix it with other styles? Kilts of course can easily be incorporated with lots of styles. However, as a general rule the more exotic the style the less well the kilt will go with it. For instance, never ever wear a tartan kilt with a Hawaiian shirt! Tartan kilt with Cuban wedding shirt? Maybe. Tartan kilt with Kimono? Yeah...probably not, but your mileage may vary. But what about other accessories? In this case we were asked if we thought a tweed vest could be paired with a Western Shirt, or Cowboy Shirt. This is a trickier one. Do you want one vest you can wear with both your kilt and with your western wear? Or do you just want Scottish tweed to go with the Ely Walker plaid shirt you got from Shepler's? Well the devil's in those details, partner. Our basic answer is that we aren't sure it would look that great. The key being how pronounced the design of the yoke on the shirt is. Some western shirts are very simple. Others are true works of art full of detailed embroidery or made from bold prints - meant to be showpieces all by themselves. Generally we are concerned that a typical sedate Scottish tweed would clash with the shirt. What do you think? A note of advise on vests worn with both kilts and pants: Generally vests for Highland Dress are cut shorter to better work with the kilt, which rests at just above the navel. This means a vest form an Argyll set can look oddly short if you wear it with trousers or jeans (especially those low-cut hip-huggin skinny jeans!). And in turn, a regular "Saxon" suit vest will often look too long with a kilt unless you have a long torso. It isn't necessarily a show stopper, but it is something you MUST consider when mixing the styles. In the market for tweeds? Check out our selection... https://www.usakilts.com/advancedsear...
