The Story Bridge is Australia’s longest cantilever bridge and an icon of Queensland since it’s opening on July 6th 1940. It was opened by Sir Leslie Orme Wilson, the Governor of Queensland with an excited crowd of 50,000 watching on. Residents were demanding an additional bridge over the river since the 1920s and finally construction started on 24 May 1935. Wanting the best they hired Queensland born John Bradfield to design an iconic bridge for Brisbane just as he had done for Sydney in designing the Harbour Bridge. The bridge was a mammoth undertaking made up of over 6 million bolts, and 12,000 tonnes of steel. The cost was 1.6 million pounds but tragically there was a cost in human life with 3 men dying during construction. This massive structure was a feat of its time having been built during the Great Depression.
