Wilson County Schools is asking families for feedback on a proposal that could shift when students start their school day. The district recently sent out a survey gauging support for a staggered start schedule, where elementary, middle, and high school students would all begin at different times. Officials say the change is being considered to help with a shortage of bus drivers and to keep up with the district’s rapid growth. “If we had the magic wand to outfit all our routes with drivers, we would do that. But hope is not a reliable strategy,” district spokesperson Bart Barker said. “It’s been a struggle to get every route covered. This is somewhat outside-the-box thinking.” Parents at Lebanon High School’s football game Friday night shared mixed reactions. Some worry that later start and end times for high schoolers could interfere with after-school activities, sports, or jobs. “My son is both involved in extracurriculars, and he works. Plus, he has an AP course load, so it’s a challenging week every single week. I can’t imagine what our life would look like if school ended at 4:30,” said Kelsey Condit, the parent of a Lebanon High junior. Others, like Wilson County Schools parent Leah Benner, believe staggered times could ease congestion on campus. “I think it’s a very good idea, just because where I live and where my kids are zoned, getting in and out just as a parent, it’s a logistical nightmare,” she said. One unresolved question is which age groups would start earlier. District leaders note research suggests teens benefit from later start times, but some parents argue high school should remain at 8:30 a.m. again, due to the after-school activities. https://fox17.com/news/local/wilson-c... _______________ Follow!
