He walks through his approach and shows how just putting sand dollars in water will turn the water into a murky brine, but really not turn the sand dollars white. He then applies a bleach / water solution and the difference is noticeable. He then lets them sit for a couple days and finally, removes the sand dollars to dry. His daughter then paints the sand dollars and gives them a very cool arts and craftsy feel. These should make great decorations and will be a treat to give to relatives who were on the trip as Christmas ornaments. Steps: 1. Find sand dollars (we were lucky that the ocean was plentiful with them on this trip - not likely to happen for most). Carefully sliding / shuffling your feet on the ocean floor during low tide seemed to be our best approach, then keeping our foot on the sand dollar and diving down to grab them before losing them in the water was our approach. 2. Collect a grouping of sand dollars for bleaching and put in a container that will allow them to spread out and be submerged in the bleach / water solution. Consider rinsing them off with water initially before applying solution in next step. 3. Pour bleach / water mix solution on sand dollars and cover them (to avoid animals / birds / etc. from getting into the bleach water; allow to sit for 1+4. days (may want to move them around some to ensure they get covered by the bleach water solution). 4. After waiting a day or longer (probably helps to have them in the solution longer to get a brighter white), drain the solution and apply water to rinse off the solution / chemicals from the sand dollar; feel free to rinse more than once being careful not to break the sand dollars. 5. Set them out in sunlight to dry; may want to put down plastic or cardboard to keep from staining the surface you are setting them on. 6. After drying, find an artist to paint them or paint them yourself (or keep them as nice white sand dollars - they look pretty cool that way too). 7. For Christmas ornaments, feel free to apply a string or a hook to them, or hot glue a hanger on the back side.
