With us now at RFH Classics, we are delighted to present this 1980 (W) MG Midget 1500 Anniversary Edition, finished in gleaming Gloss Black with matching Black trim. This special car is one we previously had the pleasure of supplying to its last owner who, due to work commitments, has now returned to France. As the car was not suitable for use there, he approached us to buy it back, an opportunity we were more than happy to accept. This Midget is No. 44 of the final 500 produced at the Abingdon factory to mark the end of the hugely successful Midget production run. All Anniversary models were finished in Gloss Black and featured subtle specification changes including a revised dashboard with a single temperature gauge replacing the traditional oil pressure dial and a black radio binnacle fitted beneath the dash mounted interior light. As one of the earliest build numbers, this car represents an increasingly collectible and desirable piece of MG history, embodying the very last of the true Abingdon built British sports cars. When we first acquired the car around two years ago it had been the subject of a father and son restoration project spanning some five years. The restoration was carried out to a high standard and, as the photographs show, the results are excellent. It is pleasing to note that the restorers remained faithful to the original Anniversary specification, retaining features such as the period vinyl seat coverings, Rostyle wheels and the OE spec vinyl soft top which remains in very good condition, complete with a clear rear window. Power comes from the familiar 1491cc four-cylinder engine, paired with a four speed manual gearbox. During the restoration, a new clutch and slave cylinder were fitted and the engine was reportedly converted to run on unleaded fuel. The engine starts easily with minimal choke, settling to a smooth idle with excellent oil pressure both hot and cold. The braking system also received attention, including new wheel cylinders, shoes and pads, while the Rostyle wheels were refurbished and fitted with new tyres all round. The MG Midget is a joy to drive — nimble, responsive, and full of character. This Anniversary Edition would make an excellent choice for a first time classic buyer seeking an affordable and easy to maintain sports car or equally as suitable for the seasoned enthusiast who appreciates the engaging drive these cars deliver. Accompanying the car is a comprehensive history file, neatly presented in one of our RFH Classics folders. It includes numerous MOT certificates dating back to 1988, together with service and parts invoices from 1995 through to its pre restoration period, offering a reassuring record of its life and care.
