Is it an exciting new direction for the Star Wars saga, or is it a disappointing entry that ruins every single Star Wars trilogy? The answer is somewhere in the middle, but in terms of movie trilogies, Star Wars Last Jedi continues the grand tradition of the second act being a complete game changer when it comes to the traditional three act structure. In terms of screenplay structure or story structure, the 3 act structure divides a plot into separate acts, or sections. It’s a screenwriting technique that dates back way before Hollywood, and it’s a crucial part of the hero’s journey monomyth that is so important to the Star Wars saga. This video doesn’t spoil Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi, so we won’t reveal the fate of Mark Hamill Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher Princess Leia, Rey, Kylo Ren, Supreme Leader Snoak, and the rest of the Resistance and First Order. But to understand the journey of Luke Skywalker the Last Jedi, you need only to look at Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back. Star Wars Empire Strikes Back is the most compelling Act 2 of a cinematic movie trilogy we’ve ever seen, and it absolutely solidified the Star Wars Original Trilogy as a force to be reckoned with. Of course, plenty of Star Wars sequels and prequels have gone down the same path, with the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy doing basically the exact opposite in Attack of the Clones. And we still have to wait and see how The Last Jedi will affect the future of the franchise with Episode IX. But the lessons learned from the classic three-act structure go far beyond Star Wars. From the Matrix trilogy, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions, the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, or Dark Knight trilogy, consisting of Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight rises, all the way to the Back to the Future trilogy, Act 2 is the most crucial act of the entire story structure, and more often than not the second act is by far the stronger. The making of a Hollywood movie trilogy comes with big expense and even bigger expectations, and the anticipation is never higher than with a new entry in the Star Wars saga.
