Various of Yemenis after prayers at cemetery to visit graves of relatives and loved ones STORYLINE: Yemenis in Sanaa performed special prayers on Sunday to mark the first day of the Eid al-Adha holiday. Muslims worldwide had been preparing to celebrate Eid al-Adha this weekend, the second most important holiday in the Islamic calendar. Many Muslims celebrate the four-day feast by ritually slaughtering livestock and distributing the meat among family, friends and the poor. It’s a joyous occasion for which food is a hallmark, along with getting together with family. The celebrations this year are however overshadowed by the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis have been conducting frequent attacks on commercial and military ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, launching drones and missiles from rebel-held areas of Yemen. The attacks -- which are often unsuccessful but at times have struck the ships — have disrupted a crucial shipping route. The Houthis have defended their campaign as an effort to pressure Israel to end its war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The assaults on shipping have raised the profile of the Houthis, who are members of Islam’s minority Shiite Zaydi sect, which ruled Yemen for 1,000 years until 1962.
