The mighty Eel River seen at the bridge in Rio Dell. After a series of winter rains, the river was starting to come into shape and was a milky steelhead green. The main stem Eel was big, but starting to turn, flowing at just above 8,600 cfs and dropping in the middle of January. The Eel river should be down to a fishable height, though still big, by late next week. The next rise is forecast for next Friday, which won’t give anglers much time before it muddies back up. The South Fork of the Eel River is green and was holding right around 1,800 cfs at Miranda. The Eel dropped into good shape in the Benbow area mid week. Drift boat traffic is heavy on the weekend, but the river should be fishable to the forks at Honeydew on the Avenue of the Giants. Not a wide-open bite, but there should be some fish pushing up in this high water. For Humboldt County weekly fishing reports visit Fishing the North Coast by fishing guide Kenny Priest at https://fishingthenorthcoast.com/ Otters and Seals were seen in the river above Rio Dell. There is river access in Rio Dell off of Edwards Drive directly across the street from Grundman's Sporting Goods. Stop in Grundman's for fishing reports and tackle. Maybe you will catch the owner, Fred Grundman. The green bridge connecting Rio Dell and Scotia over the Eel River has several names, most commonly the Eagle Prairie Bridge named in 1980, also known as the Eel River Bridge or the Albert Stanwood Murphy Memorial Bridge, named in 1977. The original bridge was built in 1941 as a replacement for an older span, carrying U.S. Route 101 across the Eel River to connect Rio Dell and Scotia. The bridge survived the devastating 1964 floods, though its northern approach was damaged and rebuilt, and it's now part of California State Route 283. You can walk across the Rio Dell bridge, but there may be construction due to the recent Seismic Retrofit Project. The long through truss bridge is getting a partial seismic retrofit of the bridge’s frames. You will experience one way traffic on most days. CalTrans anticipates the project will be completed by the end of 2030. The Humboldt Redwood Company (formerly Pacific Lumber) Fisheries Exhibit is open year round for self-guided tours and is located in Scotia, California. It's the largest freshwater aquarium on the North Coast. Stocked with Chinook Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Steelhead Trout, Coastal Range Sculpin and Sacramento Pike Minnow at different stages of development, it's a educational experience for everyone. The Pike Minnow is considered an invasive species on the Eel River and are subject to culling by anglers. The nicely designed open-air, roofed structure, makes this a fun trip any time of the year. The Humboldt Redwood Fisheries Exhibit is located on 169 Main Street, a half-mile south of the main office (125 Main Street) on the right-hand side of the street. Through scientific monitoring programs, the fisheries experts ensure that Humboldt Redwood Company carefully monitors and protects the endangered and threatened Eel River watershed species included in the Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP). Every day biologists, botanists, geologists, and hydrologists work hand-in-hand with foresters, loggers, and support crews to ensure that employees in every level of the Company are committed to environmental protection. Part of their commitment includes the care and maintenance of our Fisheries Exhibit. It is open for daily self-guided tours between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Visitors are welcome to schedule a guided tour by calling (707) 601-5546. School groups in particular are encouraged to schedule a guided tour as it maximizes the learning experience.
