This episode is about something very important: women. Women are at the heart of many crises, and many of these crises happen within supply chains. Let's unpack some numbers: • Women make up about 60-80% of the workforce in global garment, textile and footwear supply chains (ILO, 2022) • In some regions, 80% of female garment workers do not earn a living wage. (Clean Clothes Campaign, 2022) • Women in global supply chains earn 15-30% less than their male counterparts for the same work (ILO, 2021) • 1 in 3 women working in global supply chains have experienced harassment or violence at work (Fair Wear Foundation, 2020) • Over 90% of women workers in supply chains have no formal contracts, social protection or union representation (Oxfam, 2022) • Only 5% of the world's largest multinational companies have strong gender equality policies in their supply chains (Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, 2023). 80% of people displaced by climate change are women (UNDP, 2023) • Climate change is projected to push an additional 158 million women and girls into poverty by 2050. (UN Women, 2022) Gender inequality, violence, injustice and problems are widespread in many supply chains. That's why it's important to understand what's happening and what we, as a collective, can do to change these situations. In Tamil Nadu, India, some grassroots leaders are trying to change this. Joining us for this episode is Thivya Rakini, President of the Tamil Nadu Textile and Common Labour Union. Freedom of association and representation are the foundations of radical and just change. Thivya explains the importance of worker-led unions in creating just workplaces. She also explains the the Dindigul Agreement to Eliminate GBVH, a legally binding agreement to end sexual violence and harassment against women workers.
