Ever had tears in your champagne? Are you a pillow pushing music lover? Or have a favorite smoke-filled haunt? Whichever your cup of tea, this exciting album, the work of Ace Cannon, an extraordinary new talent, is sheer delight for listening, dancing, crying or dreaming. Cannon has produced a new delicacy of tone which is so strikingly different that you sometimes feel that his fascinating, compelling Alto Sax is talking. His remarkable sensitivity of touch creates a mood at once haunting, vivid tantalizing. The integrity of sound comes through with brilliant clarity. It is a marvelous integration of emotional depth Cannon blends in a tender and distinctive mental imagery to achieve an exceptional technique. As a result, he had captured in this album an elusive quality of sound which is rare in the music world. Best word picture of this superb tone, perhaps, is "silk in the air,' if you can imagine the soft, exquisite beauty of silken sounds. In Cannon's hands, the instrument is never strained as he reaches for the artistry of melody. The emergence of Cannon as a major new recording personality is one of the most unique stories in modern American music. Cannon, 27, played in night clubs with a combo in Memphis, Tenn., for several years. The nightly grind was struggle, but with the years of playing he honed a stimulating, impeccable, provocative style all his own. His talent was quickly recognized by a nationally famous combo, but his individual talent remained in the background for two years. He toured the nation with the combo playing show dates, appeared on national television shows, but he was nothing more than "the sax man." But, the musicians he played with recognized, a superior one. Late in 1961, Cannon recorded a single, "Tuff," an original tune which Cannon had in his mind for several years. It just "came to him" much as many of the tunes composed by the late, great American composer George Gershwin. "Tuff," a velvet, magnetic instrumental, was a hit. It climbed high on the charts and this album was a natural to follow. "Tuff" is not tough. Most of the other tunes in this album are blues songs or famous old standards, rearranged in the inimitable Cannon style. The incomparable tonal quality of "Careless Love," for example, is, as they say in the trade, "too much." The stirring, sassy sax in "Basin St. Blues" will "scare you to death," as the musicians say when they think something is really great. To say that Cannon's very fiber of being comes through cannot fully describe the golden beauty of his notes in "Trouble in Mind.' And while listening to his "Wabash Blues," one could lose himself in reverie. If you're in a sad mood, "Blues in My Heart" will make you cry. If you're in a gay mood, you will marvel. Much credit for the splendid arrangements goes to Carl McVoy. Cannon was born May 5, 1934, at Grenada, Miss., and at age two his family moved to Memphis, Tenn., which is still his home. His father played guitar with musical groups in night clubs. Cannon knew as a boy he wanted to be a musician. He loved the sound of the sax. He began playing it at 10 and played in school bands until he graduated from Memphis Technical High School in 1952. He entered Memphis State University to major in music, later dropped out to earn a living and played with different combos in clubs until he joined the touring combo in 1959. When "Tuff" hit big, it shot him to national popularity. He and his combo are now in demand for show dates all over the nation. Cannon in his 17 years of creating his sax technique has played all styles - jazz, crazy chords, off-beat, up-beat. His versatility is amazing. But what you hear here is his own - original, worthy, sincere. He truly sets an enchanting mood.
