This is the inspirational story of Troi Lee, a deaf DJ, founder of "Deaf Rave" and pioneer of the UK's deaf music scene. Troi and his team of deaf producers, DJ’s, MCs, sign singers and dancers will turn up the bass as they celebrate 20 years of deaf raving. Directed by Ted Evans and Executive Produced by Caroline Williamson. From Troi’s early days organising house parties and getting rejected by music venues, to performing for thousands of deaf and hearing people alike at major music festivals including Glastonbury. Troi has dedicated the last 20 years to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for deaf artists and performers, struggling against prejudice to show that deaf people can also enjoy, experience and make music. We join Troi as he puts on his 20 year anniversary show in London - showcasing deaf and disabled dancers, MCs, rappers and sign singers. Through heavy bass and deep vibrations, he connects audiences through the universal language of music. The film was made as part of the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund - a scheme created in 2020 to break down barriers of access for emerging filmmakers. The initiative also provides filmmakers with a foundation of knowledge and hands-on training to help them succeed in their careers. The scheme was made with support from WDM Entertainment, Triple Exposure and Molinare. This film was commissioned as part of the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Netflix documentaries. Congratulate all the film makers who made the documentaries. It was a honour to be part of this and thank you especially to Netflix UK & Ireland for this wonderful opportunity. I truly hope this documentary inspires many and also elevates Deaf culture & awareness to the mainstream. Like I say, I want to motivate the future Deaf & disabled generations to come. And most of all, to enjoy music and visual performances! - Troi Lee The four other films made as part of the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Netflix documentaries can be found here: Turn Up The Bass • TURN UP THE BASS Documentary | Netflix Black Stroke - • BLACK STROKE Documentary | Netflix Iranian Yellow Pages - • IRANIAN YELLOW PAGES Documentary | Netflix Two Mothers - • TWO MOTHERS Documentary | Netflix Sperm Donors WANTED - • SPERM DONORS WANTED!
