Paromomycin is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic with both amoebicidal and antibacterial properties. It is produced by Streptomyces rimosus var. paromomycinus and works by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible organisms2. Uses Amoebiasis – Effective against Entamoeba histolytica, particularly for intestinal infections. Cryptosporidiosis – Used in HIV-infected patients to suppress Cryptosporidium infections. Tapeworm infections – Sometimes used for cestodiasis, though praziquantel is preferred. Hepatic coma management – Helps reduce intestinal ammonia production. Bacterial infections – Similar antibacterial spectrum to neomycin, but mainly used for intestinal infections. Mechanism of Action Paromomycin binds to the 16S ribosomal RNA, disrupting protein synthesis and leading to cell death. Side Effects Gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, diarrhea).
