The recent release of the Boy Scout "Perversion Files", documenting more than a thousand cases of alleged child abuse from 1965-1985, includes a man from Western North Carolina. Documents show scout leader Mark Bumgarner was accused of sexually molesting a boy near Gastonia in 1978, but the Piedmont Council gave him another chance. Shortly afterwards, Bumgarner was accused of molesting 2 more boys at a camp out. He plead guilty to one count of child abuse and the National Council expelled him. Six years later, Bumgarner turned up as a scout leader in Virginia. He was eventually accused of abusing two more boys and sentenced to six years in prison.Some parents of boys in WNC say the Perversion Files are concerning, but will not keep them from putting their sons in Boy Scouts. Mom Rhonda Honeycutt says her husband had a great experience as a Boy Scout, became an Eagle Scout, and her six month old son will probably join the Boy Scouts in the future. Connie Bowes is the leader of the Daniel Boone Council which includes 5 thousand scouts and 16 hundred volunteers in Western North Carolina. Bowes says all volunteers now go through background checks.
