(24 Mar 1998) Spanish/Nat The stepdaughter of former Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has announced she will be taking the prominent Sandinista leader to court charged with sexually abusing her as a child. Zoilamerica Narvaez called on her stepfather Ortega to give up his right to parliamentary immunity against prosecution which he enjoys as a deputy of the National Assembly. Critics have said that Narvaez is trying to damage Ortega's chances of re-election as leader of the Sandinista Party, Nicaragua's biggest opposition group. But Narvaez, herself a militant Sandinista, says there are no political motives behind the charges. Zoilamerica Narvaez published a statement on March 3rd claiming that her stepfather, Daniel Ortega had sexually abused her from the age of eleven. Since that day Narvaez dropped the name Ortega from her surname, cutting ties with the family. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Daniel Ortega has not responded personally, the political apparatus has respond for him using ways to intimidate me, to provoke me". SUPER CAPTION: Zoilamerica Narvaez Critics, including Ortega's wife Rosario Murillo have publicly dismissed her daughter's claims as false. Ortega has yet to respond directly to the sexual abuse charges. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "It is difficult to confront Daniel Ortega when he can't be found as a man but only when, as I already mentioned he continues to hide behind his framework of power. It is difficult to confront the political system when Daniel Ortega is part of that same system. But to defend my rights is a matter of principles". SUPER CAPTION: Zoilamerica Narvaez, Ortega's stepdaughter The accusation came just forty days before the party's national congress for which Ortega is a candidate for re-election. But Narvaez denies there is any political motives behind her decision to press charges. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I always had to keep quiet and put the Sandinista Front first, put the symbol first. Today, for a year now, with the responsibility of being a mother I couldn't carry on having traumas which were damaging the future of my children. I didn't want my children to see me crying any more and having a series of problems which made it difficult for them to respect me as a mother." SUPER CAPTION: Zoilamerica Narvaez, Ortega's stepdaughter Narvaez said her decision to go public was prompted after a year of psychological therapy and it seems she is now clear in her objective. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Daniel Ortega must answer for this." SUPER CAPTION: Zoilamerica Narvaez, Ortega's stepdaughter Recently sources from the National Direction of the Sandinista Front confirmed that Ortega could be accused for the offences of seduction, sexual harassment, incest and rape. The process will be guided by a team of advisers belonging to the organisation "Women Against Violence" who will analyse the charges against him. According to the president of the Liberal Party group in the Assembly, Eliseo Nunez, Ortega could be stripped of the immunity he enjoys as deputy of the National Assembly if there is a legal action against him. Nunez has said he would support a move to take away Ortega's immunity in order to allow a legal case by Narvaez to go forward.
