This temple is located on the west bank of Neva River, Melpadi Village in the Vellore District of Tamil Nadu. Archeological Survey of India maintains this old temple; hence videos are not allowed inside. This Somanatheeswarar temple was built over 1000 years ago by the Paranthaka Chola king I and was completed by Rajaraja Chola king I. But others say that this temple may have been constructed even during the time of Aditya I. There are differences in opinion about who the king is because the inscription here begins with "கோனேரின்மை கொண்டான்"! This Melpadi, also called Rajesreyapuram, was known as Veeranarayanapuram during the Chola period. It is said that the Cholas fortified the town to protect the border as it is the border of the two countries (Chalukyas and the Rashtrakutas). From the inscription of Rajaraja Chola I, the presiding deity was called Cholendra Simmeswarar in those days!. Sanctum Vimanam is of stone dome type, and the Kalasam is also made of stone. The Dome and the Kalasam are Dark-black/Green colour stones. Many of the sculptures here are made of these green stones!. Goddess Tapaskruta Devi is in a separate shrine. That, too, is a particular speciality. It is known that it may have been built during the Vijayanagara period. Near the Nandi statue, Audaiyar is in a broken condition outside the Prakaram. On the Southside of this Somanatheeswarar temple, two hundred (200) feet away - Arinjaya Chola (AD 956-967), the great grandfather of Rajaraja Chola, died here after the war happened at Thakkolam (1014 AD); hence Rajaraja Chola built this temple in memory of it. The Shivalingam in this ancient temple receives sunlight twice (2) a year. From March 21st to 24th and from September 21st to 24th, the sun falls on the Shivalingam in this temple. ****************************************************************** YouTube: / chithirampesuthada Instagram: / chithirampesuthada Facebook: / chithirampesuthadasuresh Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/chithir...
