Welcome back. Today we’re on Lesson 4 of the A Course in Miracles Workbook. This is a big turning point in the early lessons. It shifts the practice from the things you see to the thoughts in your mind. And it begins training you to recognize how much of your thinking is simply noise — not truth. Today’s idea is: “These thoughts do not mean anything. They are like the things I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place].” Unlike the first three lessons, you don’t begin with the idea. You begin by quietly watching your thoughts for about a minute. Notice whatever shows up: random thoughts, pleasant ones, unpleasant ones, neutral ones. The Workbook says you’ll see such a mixture that none of them can really be called “good” or “bad.” This is why they do not mean anything. Even the thoughts you like — the “positive” ones — are still shadows of your real thoughts. And the “negative” ones are simply blocks. The Course says you don’t actually want either, because neither reflects your real mind. Here’s the practice for today: 1. Spend about one minute watching your thoughts. Don’t dig, don’t analyze — just observe what floats by. 2. Then apply the idea: “This thought about _____ does not mean anything. It is like the things I see in this room.” Use it with any thought: pleasant, uncomfortable, embarrassing, anxious, neutral. Everything is suitable. But don’t hunt for thoughts, and don’t spend longer than a minute searching your mind. The Workbook says you aren’t experienced enough yet to avoid getting lost or preoccupied. This is not an exercise in judgment — it’s an exercise in neutrality. These thoughts do not mean anything. This lesson begins training your mind to separate the meaningless from the meaningful. It shows you that the constant commentary running through your mind is not your real thought. It’s habit. It’s story. It’s past associations and projection. Lesson 4 is the beginning of remembering that the meaningless is outside you… and the meaningful is within. So today, go gently. Notice your thoughts for a minute. Then simply say: “This thought about ____ does not mean anything.” No judgment. No analysis. Just recognition. Your real thoughts are untouched behind all of this. And this lesson is how we begin clearing the surface.
