Emma Guy's story is a testament to the resilience required to survive a Victorian childhood in London and build a new life in colonial New Zealand. From her migration aboard the Euterpe to her settlement in the Manawatū district, Emma became a part of history through her work with temperance organisations and her signature on the 1893 Women's Suffrage Petition. By exploring her family history, we uncover how social records, from electoral rolls to newspaper archives, allow us to see the lives of women who often disappear from the historical narrative. Emma’s life was defined by massive changes and personal challenges, from losing her father at eleven to raising a family through fires and financial crisis. Yet, through it all, she persisted - becoming part of the first generation of women in the world to exercise the right to vote. 0:00 Introduction 0:57 London Origins and Early Loss 2:02 Marriage and Family 3:14 Voyage of the Euterpe 4:35 Arrival and the New Land 5:17 Community and the Temperance Movement 6:25 Resilience 8:18 Electoral Change 9:54 Ends and Conclusions If you enjoy these explorations into family history and the "ordinary" lives that shaped our society, please like the video and subscribe to the channel.
