The Oshkosh M1070A0 Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET) was developed in the early 1990s to replace the aging M911/M747 system and support the growing weight of the M1 Abrams main battle tank. Entering service in 1993, the M1070A0 paired with the M1000 trailer to transport, deploy, and recover heavy armored vehicles across any terrain. Powered by a 500 hp Detroit Diesel engine, featuring a 5-speed automatic transmission, 8x8 drivetrain, central tire inflation, and front/rear steering axles, the A0 offered excellent maneuverability and power. Its fully enclosed, boxy cab seated a driver, crew, and up to four tank crewmen—allowing both vehicle and personnel to be moved in one mission. From the start, the cab was designed under the Army’s LTAS (Long-Term Armor Strategy) with A-kit structural mounts and optional B-kit armor. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, the M1070A0 received additional Crew Protection Kits and fuel tank fire suppressant blankets, making it one of the safest vehicles on the battlefield. The M1070A0 first saw action in Bosnia and Kosovo peacekeeping operations and later proved critical in Iraq by hauling Abrams tanks and other armored vehicles to forward positions. With its reliable performance, rugged design, and modular protection, the M1070A0 became the backbone of U.S. heavy armored logistics and set the standard for future HET development.
