Xiamen, abbreviated as "Xiamen" or "Lu", alias Heron Island, is a prefecture-level city, sub-provincial city and planned city under the jurisdiction of Fujian Province, a special economic zone of China approved by the State Council, and an important central city, port and scenic tourist city on the southeast coast. It consists of Xiamen Island, Gulangyu Island, Haicang Peninsula on the west coast, Jimei Peninsula on the north coast, Xiang'an Peninsula on the east coast, Dadeng Island, Xiaodeng Island, Tong'an inland, and Jiulong River. Xiamen speaks the Minnan language and is part of the Minnan region, along with Zhangzhou and Quanzhou. The area under its jurisdiction is 1,700.61 square kilometres. As of October 2021, Xiamen has six districts under its jurisdiction and a resident population of 5,163,970 as of 1 November 2020. Xiamen is a national pilot zone for comprehensive supporting reforms, a national logistics hub, a southeastern international shipping centre, a pilot free trade zone, a national demonstration zone for marine economic development, a cross-strait demonstration zone for cooperation in emerging industries and modern service industries, a cross-strait regional financial services centre and a cross-strait trade centre.
