SUBSCRIBE. From the U.S. National Archives, the film's title is "Abnaa Lubnan (Sons of Lebanon)" though "People of Lebanon" seems like a better translation. This U.S. Information Agency film covers the history of Lebanon going back to ancient Phoenicians. The purpose of the film was U.S.A. Cold War propaganda focusing on the 1958 Lebanon crisis. The nearly hour long film is an affectionate portrait of Lebanese culture, democracy, religious diversity, education, arts and crafts, and the progress of women in the society. The film is beautifully shot in color and shows ancient ruins, craftspeople at work, museums, beaches, dancers, fisherman, and a great variety of Lebanese life. According to wiki: "The 1958 Lebanon crisis was a political crisis in Lebanon caused by political and religious tensions in the country that included an American military intervention, which lasted for around three months until President Camille Chamoun, who had requested the assistance, completed his term as president of Lebanon. American and Lebanese government forces occupied the Port of Beirut and Beirut International Airport. With the crisis over, the United States withdrew. " In this case, President Eisenhower sent troops after Lebanon asked the United Nations for help. The narrator doesn't mention Eisenhower's other 1950s interventions - such as coups against democratically elected governments in Iran, Guatemala, and the Congo. One would think Ike and Uncle Sam are benevolent saviors if you watch this film in a historic vacuum. look for the odd shot of a U.S. soldier in public wearing only his underwear. #1958 #history #usnationalarchives #lebanonborder #rome #phoenicians #beirut
