Roads of Westfjords, Iceland: 65 & 64 (Ísafjörður, Suðureyri & Flateyri) (06.07.2021)

This is a drive through video of two roads located in northern Westfjords regions of Iceland. These roads are called Súgandafjarðarvegur (65) and Flateyrarvegur (64). Connecting these two routes is Vestfjarðavegur (60). We started the journey in Ísafjörður, which is the capital of Westfjords and it's the biggest city in that area, with population a little over 2700. Staying on road 60, we soon entered two tunnels (Breiðadals- & Botnsheiðargöng). There is an actual intersection inside the tunnels, which is the starting point of road 65. The tunnels are at times very narrow and have enough width for only one car. This means there are lots of "pockets" where cars need so stop and wait to let the opposite coming traffic through. These pockets are only on one side, so it's up to your driving direction, if you have to stop and wait or not. Road 65 is paved and it goes through a small town called Suðureyri. We drove through it and after that 65 turns into a nice unpaved road going along the coast, with huge mountains on the other side. This section is only for couple of miles until the road ends at a farm. Having cleared road 65, we drove back into the tunnels and stayed on road 60 until we got to turn right onto Flateyrarvegur (64). It's a short and paved road going to Flateyri, another small town roughly the same size as Suðureyri. Both have population over 250 people. Flateyri is famous for its bookshop, which is the first original store in Iceland. It was founded in 1914 and has been operated by the same family for four generations.
