Darius II was a ruler of the Persian Empire who reigned between 424 and 404 BC. He was the son of Artaxerxes I and the father of Artaxerxes II. During his reign, Darius II had to deal with numerous rebellions by local satraps and military leaders, including Cyrus the Younger, his own younger brother, who attempted to stage a coup against him. Despite these challenges, Darius II managed to maintain the integrity of the Persian Empire and continued the policies of his predecessors in expanding the empire’s territories by conquest. He clashed with the Greeks in several military campaigns, including the Peloponnesian War, which ended with a treaty between Persia and Sparta. Darius II also faced challenges from the north, where the Scythians threatened the Persian borders. During his reign, Darius II also oversaw the construction of several monumental buildings, including the 100-columned palace in Susa. He died in 404 BC and was succeeded by his son Artaxerxes II. Darius II's reign is significant for the continuity it provided within the Persian Empire, despite the challenges he faced during his rule.
