The Winner of the WIDER WORLD category is Waitukubuli National Trail Clearance and Restoration, Segment 11, Dominica, (nominated by Nigel Tisdall) is the 2018 winner. In 2017, Hurricane Maria struck the Caribbean island of Dominica, killing 65 people and leaving 90 per cent of homes without a roof. The tourist industry was battered too. Annette and Stefan Loerner, owners of the Tamarind Tree Hotel, decided the best way to encourage visitors back was to restore a section of the now blocked Waitukubuli National Trail, a 115-mile hiking route. They organised tools and volunteers and led the back-breaking work. Guild member Nigel Tisdall pitched in. The project is rescuing a valuable nature-based attraction and providing ongoing paid maintenance work for villagers.
