GIULIETTA WERMEZ [s]. Little seems to be known of the life of this gifted coloratura other than appearances she made between 1895 and 1906. The earliest performance traced was in Barcelona, 1895, as Gilda. She spent a season as the Coliseo Recrejos (Portugal), 1900, singing Elvira in I Puritani, Violetta and other such parts and then a season in St. Petersburg in similar repertoire, including Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera with Krusceniski, Fabbri and Battistini. She was very successful as Gilda at La Scala, and she appeared in a number of other Italian houses in related repertoire. In 1901 she was at the opera in Rome with Bonci in 4 performances by Puritani, four performances by Sonnambula and a single performance by Rigoletto. Her youthful voice, with its appealing timbre as demonstrated on her few and rare Zonophone and Pathe records, fully illustrates the reason for her popularity. Why she so quickly disappeared isn’t known. Perhaps marriage? This was, at the time, the reason for a number of women having left the stage early on, particularly if wed to someone of social or aristocratic standing
