Kingdom of God on earth: peace, rest, restoration As slaves in Egypt, the Israelites' life was difficult. But in the Promised Land—owning property, peace within their borders, rain in due season, abundant harvests—would be a blessing—if they had obeyed God. But they were not obedient and did not enter that rest. That's the lesson for us. Hebrews 4:11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. Hebrews 4:3–5 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: “So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest,’” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.” He connects Christians’ hope—to enter a future rest at the end of this life—to God resting after the 6-day re-creation. God rested the 7th day and made it holy. He instructs mankind to rest on the 7th day of each week, a reminder of how He rested. 2 Peter 3:8 With the Lord 1 day is as 1000 years, and 1000 years as 1 day. The millennial reign of Christ on earth is like a 1000-year sabbath that after a 6000-year period of time. Isaiah 66:23 And it shall come to pass that from one New Moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me, says the Lord. In the future millennium everyone will keep the 7th-day Sabbath. Exodus 20:10 The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. The Sabbath is a day to worship God, draw near to God, and to rest. Matthew 11:28–30 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
