A problem well-stated is half-solved Charles Kettering At a point in history, bicycles had up to 10 cogs at the rear wheel; then the word changed. When a component manufacturer released an 11-speed cassette for road bikes, the width of the cassette and freehub interface increased by 1.85mm. Some people were able to purchase replacement freehub bodies for their wheels; others were not so lucky. I had machined some Aluminum freehub bodies to provide additional clearance for the wider cassette. Then I got asked to machine a Titanium freehub. Since this would be an interrupted cut – in Titanium – I figured that an easier solution was required. Why not machine 1.85 (or so) mm off of the cassette?
