Lyrics by Ralph Lycett Tyrrell, Music & video by Barry Ferrier. Our music video is conceived as an immersive journey into Martin Johnson Heade's artistic vision, with particular focus on his transformative period in Brazil. The animation style draws inspiration from both his precise naturalist technique and the dreamy, luminous quality that made his work revolutionary for its time. As the music begins, we see the painting begin to ripple and move, drawing us into Heade's world through animation. Our animation technique employs a unique blend of traditional hand-drawn elements and digital motion effects to capture Heade's signature luminism. We've developed a distinctive way to animate his characteristic play of light - the way it filters through jungle canopies and catches the iridescent flash of hummingbird wings. The animation maintains the artist's meticulous attention to detail while adding fluid movement that emphasizes the magical quality of his observations. The pacing of our animation mirrors the gentle, contemplative mood of the bossa nova soundtrack. During verses, we follow detailed examinations of individual orchid blooms and hovering hummingbirds, capturing the intimate way Heade studied his subjects. In chorus moments, the perspective pulls back to reveal the grand scale of the Brazilian rainforest setting, with multiple hummingbirds creating intricate aerial ballets around clusters of exotic flowers. Gentle atmospheric effects - mists, changing light, birds and drifting clouds - create a dreamlike quality that emphasizes the restorative nature of both the art and the music.on. Our goal with this project is to create a visual experience that honors both the technical precision and the spiritual wonder present in Heade's work. Through animation, we aim to extend the viewer's encounter with these masterpieces, allowing them to step inside the paintings and experience the living, breathing world that Heade saw and captured with such remarkable skill. Born in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, Heade initially trained under folk artist Edward Hicks and began his artistic career with portraits before shifting to landscapes in the mid-1850s. Heade's work is characterized by its focus on light, atmosphere, and natural beauty, particularly evident in his salt marsh landscapes and seascapes. Notable pieces include Approaching Thunder Storm (1859) and various still lifes featuring tropical birds and flowers, especially after his travels to South America in the 1860s, where he painted vibrant hummingbirds amidst lush flora[1][2][4]. Despite his talent, Heade struggled for recognition during his lifetime and faced rejection from the New York art establishment. He eventually settled in St. Augustine, Florida, where he continued to paint until his death. His work gained renewed interest in the 1940s, leading to his recognition as a major American artist, with pieces now held in prestigious collections like the National Gallery of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_...
