Alas, farewell - a short film on toxic friends

My film addresses the issue of bullying within toxic friendships, as I feel as though bullying through friendships are more common yet for some reason, less talked about. It’s a lot harder to realize you are being bullied when the mean verbal abuse comes from a close friend, as many people assume bullying occurs only outside your social network. My film explores the psychological torment of a victim of bullying, and the hurt they feel, while also portraying the bittersweet pain of cutting ties with a toxic friend. We see this through the character of ‘Jasmine’, who feels as though her toxic friend is someone who still cares a lot about her, despite the mean and cruel remarks. The film also shows the impact bullying has on youth mental health, and how difficult it is to remove yourself from a toxic friendship that has built itself over time. At the end of the film, the victim eventually stands up for herself and decides to move on, suggesting that anyone can overcome bullying. Within the film, we also explored the idea of bystanders, and how being exposed to bullying, that is not directly affected by it, can still impact an individual’s mental health. The character ‘Jasmine’, portrays somebody who is not only a bystander and observer of bullying, but a victim of it too.
