The Tarr Steps is an ancient Clapper Bridge located on Exmoor National Park in Somerset. Legend has it that this clapper bridge was built by the devil and that the devil said that he would kill anyone who tried to cross. Curious, the local people sent a cat over the clapper bridge to see what happened. The cat vaporised right in front of them. The locals then sent the local parson to cross the bridge to meet the devil. Half way across the devil appeared. The parson stood his ground, even though he was being sworn and shouted at by the devil. The devil eventually gave up and allowed people to cross the bridge, unless he chooses to sunbathe which remains to this day. Tarr Steps is the longest clapper bridge in Britain and is 17 spans. The first time the Tarr Steps was mentioned was in Tudor Times but it is thought to be a lot older than this. None of the stones of the clapper bridge which crosses the River Barle are cemented together. They are all loose and is a great example of early engineering. Due to them not being cemented together, the Tarr Steps has had to be repaired a number of times due to being damaged when the river is high.
