Melissa is a proud Aboriginal woman and a passionate Indigenous educator, researcher, and advocate dedicated to transforming education through culturally responsive practice. With over a decade of experience in both primary and secondary teaching, and higher education, Melissa brings deep knowledge of Indigenous pedagogies, trauma-informed education, and curriculum reform to her work. Currently undertaking a PhD, Melissa's research explores how pre-service teachers are equipped to embed Indigenous perspectives into their future classrooms—challenging systems and advocating for authentic integration of Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in mainstream education. She also contributed as a curriculum specialist and learning and teaching leader, working alongside educators and institutions to support truth-telling and equity through curriculum design and incorporation. As a published author, Melissa contributed to the book "Specialised Metabolites of Australia's Customary Medicinal Flora", sharing Indigenous knowledge and insights on the cultural significance of native medicinal plants. Motivated by personal lived experience and cultural learnings, Melissa is committed to creating inclusive learning environments that honour Indigenous perspectives, empower students, and contribute to a more equitable education system. https://about.informit.org/indigenous... Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led scholarly projects are changing the national story in meaningful and positive ways, as well as having beneficial impacts within their own communities. At Informit, we believe that the proliferation of Indigenous-led research in recent years is among the most exciting developments in Australian research right now, and we are keen to amplify these contributions. The following interviews with Indigenous Scholars You Should Know cast a spotlight on current Australian First Nations scholarship: highlighting emerging methodologies, reflecting upon experiences within academia, and unpacking some of the ideas informing these important projects. The diverse fields and varied career stages of the interviewees echo the breadth of outputs being produced by First Nations academics. _____________________________________________ Informit is home to the largest collection of authoritative Australasian content.
