Set on the remote St. Paul’s River along the Quebec/ Labrador border, Flying Beavers & Running Salmon is an immersive short film about wild Atlantic salmon, wilderness, and the people who return year after year to fish them. Shot in Quebec and Labrador with canoes, float planes, and a small team of seasoned anglers, the film follows Vermont guide Travis “TJ” Dezotell, his father Jeff Dezotell, and long-time club regulars Jake Wheeler, Dick White, Rod Thomas, Matty Barney, and Eldon Jones as they wade the storied waters of the St. Paul’s Salmon Fishing Club—thirty-seven miles of river fished by no more than eight anglers at a time. From aerial float-plane arrivals and dawn fly casts to the quiet rituals of camp life, the film explores what it means to return to wild places—to stand in the current with old friends, to pass on knowledge between generations, and to witness the enduring strength of the Atlantic salmon. Guided by narration that blends history, memory, and reverence for the landscape, Flying Beavers & Running Salmon celebrates a river that still runs free—and the bond between those who protect and pursue the fish that call it home. There are few places left where a river begins with an airplane. The St. Paul’s River is one of them. Flowing from the deep forests of Labrador into Quebec’s Lower North Shore, the St. Paul’s is a dark, powerful river known for its Atlantic salmon and its remoteness. Reached only by DeHavilland Beaver bush plane, it winds through more than thirty-seven miles of wilderness where time slows, silence matters, and fish are felt more than seen. Flying Beavers & Running Salmon is about more than fishing. It’s about patience, generational knowledge, and the pull of wild places that continue to call people back. Guided by men who have spent decades on this river, the film explores the rhythm of a fishery shaped by weather, trust, and respect — and the connection between people, wild fish, and rivers that still run free. While it’s the Beaver that takes you to them, it’s the salmon that bring you back. ⸻ About the Filmmaker & Guide I’m TJ Dezotell, a Vermont-based fly-fishing guide, filmmaker, and travel host. Through Gibbs Guides, I offer guided fly fishing and lodging in northern Vermont, host international fishing journeys in Labrador, Quebec, and Newfoundland, and create films and written stories rooted in real experience and conservation. My work is focused on translating experience into story — using film to help people understand not just where we fish, but why these places matter, and why they’re worth protecting for generations to come. ⸻ Learn More Guided Fly Fishing, Lodging & Hosted Travel in Vermont, Quebec, Newfoundland, and Labrador. https://www.TourVTNH.com More films, stories & behind-the-scenes work Subscribe here and follow along on Instagram @gibbsguides Professional gear rep for: Thomas & Thomas Flyrods, Watermaster Rafts, and Wayward Woodshop nets.
