Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 21 in C Major, Op. 53 “Waldstein” This work was composed in 1804, when Beethoven was thirty-four years old, and was dedicated to his patron and close friend Count Ferdinand von Waldstein (1762–1823), from whom it derives its nickname. At this stage, Beethoven’s compositional style had reached a remarkable level of maturity, marking a period in which he was forging his own distinctive artistic path; as such, the work stands as a masterpiece. It is notable not only for its brilliant display of virtuosity but also for its grand conception and fresh, lyrical character. 00:02 I. Allegro Con brio, C Major, 4/4 time, Sonata form The movement opens with a soft chord, from which a radiant motive emerges in the upper register, presenting the first theme. What plays a leading role here are the three motives embedded within this first theme, which are transposed and developed, forming the basis for the repetition of the exposition. In the development section, the first theme is initially elaborated, after which the second theme returns in the tonic key and appears in the major mode. The coda is exceptionally long and rich in content: the first and second themes continue to unfold and progress, briefly suggesting a recollection of the first theme before the movement concludes abruptly with a powerful fortissimo. 10:45 II. Introduzione. Adagio molto, F Major, 6/8 time, Rondo fo The second movement is especially renowned, distinguished by its poetic atmosphere and profound emotional depth. It has a restrained, lyrical character. 14:21 III. Rondo. Allegretto moderato - Prestissimo, C Major, 2/4 time, Rondo form This movement is generally characterized by a lively and buoyant atmosphere. It clearly demonstrates Beethoven’s musical creativity and firm structural command, and it remains one of his most beloved works. ■ Listening with the Score • Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 21 in C Major,... ■ (Analysis) Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 21 in C Major, Op. 53 “Waldstein” https://cafe.naver.com/suhkuyung67/2425 https://talk877.tistory.com/41
