On this episode of Exploring History with Crystal and Larry, we are at the confluence of the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers at the Missouri Headwaters to retrace one of the most legendary survival stories in the history of the American West—John Colter’s famous run. Standing on the very landscape where Colter fled for his life in 1808, we recount the harrowing moment when the former member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was captured by members of the Blackfeet Nation and given a terrifying “head start” before being chased across miles of open prairie. With the wind whipping across the Headwaters and the mountains rising in the distance, we describe how Colter, barefoot and exhausted, ran for miles before turning to confront one pursuer, ultimately escaping into the river and hiding beneath a beaver lodge. We explore not only the drama of that desperate sprint, but also the layered histories of this significant place.
