Der Philosoph Anton Wilhelm Amo ist spätestens seit der jahrelangen Auseinandersetzung um die Umbenennung der Berliner „M*“ - Straße und des entsprechenden U-Bahnhofs in die „Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße“ in aller Munde. Doch wer war Anton Wilhelm Amo eigentlich? Wie konnte ein in Ghana geborener Mensch, der im Zuge des Sklavenhandels an den Hof eines deutschen Herzogs gekommen war, eine so unwahrscheinliche Karriere machen? War Anton Wilhelm Amo, der mit einer Arbeit zum Leib-Seele-Problem zum Doktor der Philosophie promoviert wurde und sogar einige Jahre an der Universität Halle als anerkannter Doktor arbeitete, ein Experiment für die von universalistischen Ideen begeisterten Frühaufklärer? Zur moderierten Abendveranstaltung „Anton Wilhelm Amo. Leben und Denken zwischen Europa und Afrika“ wurden am 20. September 2021 ins Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) die beiden Gäste Prof. Dr. Dr. Jacob Mabe und Prof. Dr. Ottmar Ette unter der Schirmherrschaft der Gesellschaft für Afrikanische Philosophie (GaPh) geladen, um eben diese Fragen zu diskutieren. Ermöglicht wurde die Veranstaltung durch Förderung der Amadeu Antonio Stiftung. But who was Anton Wilhelm Amo actually? How could a person born in Ghana, who had come to the court of a German duke in the course of the slave trade, make such an improbable career? Was Anton Wilhelm Amo, who earned a doctorate in philosophy with a thesis on the mind-body problem and even worked for several years at the University of Halle as a recognized doctor, an experiment for the early enlighteners who were enthusiastic about universalistic ideas? To the moderated evening event "Anton Wilhelm Amo. Life and Thought between Europe and Africa" on September 20, 2021 at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO), the two guests Prof. Dr. Dr. Jacob Mabe and Prof. Dr. Ottmar Ette were invited under the auspices of the Society for African Philosophy (GaPh) to discuss these very questions.
